Significant National Weather
Northeast
Precipitation in the region will taper off today as the low-pressure system continues to move offshore. Lake-effect snow will be minimal across the Mid Atlantic and New England regions. Early morning temperatures are forecast to be in the teens, creating the potential for icing conditions.
Midwest
Lake-effect snow continues with heavy snow possible in portions of the Great Lakes. Light snow will fall in portions of Southwest Kansas and northern Oklahoma.
South
Snow will continue in portions of New Mexico into Texas, but will taper off by this afternoon. The low-pressure system will track southeast, producing showers across the Gulf Coast.
West
A series of systems will move onshore across the Northwest causing precipitation across much of the region for the next several days. Heavy precipitation with the potential to cause flash flooding will fall across Northern and Central California into Oregon. Significant snowfall accumulations will fall in higher elevations of Sierra Nevada and Oregon with several feet of snow possible by the end of the weekend. This precipitation will spread inland over the weekend, and bring snow showers to the Wasatch, Central Rocky mountains, higher elevations of New Mexico, and into the four corners region of the Southwest.

Severe Winter Weather
Winter weather stretched from the Southeast to the Northeast this week bringing rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow accumulations. The storms resulted in school closings, sporadic power outages, several car accidents in multiple states, flight cancellations and delays, and other transportation issues. All FEMA Regional Offices remain at Watch/Steady State. No requests were made for FEMA assistance.

Earthquake Activity
Earthquake swarms continue from Baja California, Mexico into southern California. Over 300 earthquakes ranging from M1.0 to M4.9 have occurred since Thursday, December 9, 2010. The US Geological Service (USGS) in Pasadena, Calif., reports that these earthquakes are normal aftershocks from the M7.2 earthquake that occurred in the region on April 4, 2010. No damages or injuries are reported.
