Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)
Significant National Weather: South Heavy rain is forecast from the Tennessee Valley to the Mid-Atlantic region. The heaviest rain accumulations of over 2 inches are expected in the Southern Appalachians. A wintry mix of rain and snow is anticipated from northern Mississippi, northern Alabama, Tennessee and the mountains of Virginia and North Carolina. The mountains in North Carolina and Virginia will see minor snow accumulation. Northeast Moderate to heavy rain will continue across portions of the lower Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast U.S. through tonight. A rain/snow mix is expected from the southern Appalachians to New England this morning. The heaviest snowfall accumulations are forecast for the higher elevations of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and New England. Midwest Light snow is possible from the Northern Rockies into the Central High Plains, Middle Mississippi Valley, and portions of the Great Lakes. Minor accumulations are possible by tonight in South Dakota, Nebraska, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A wintry mix of rain and snow, associated with the storm moving up the East Coast, will reach the Upper Ohio Valley today. West Below normal temperatures are forecast for portions of California, Nevada and Arizona overnight and early this morning. In portions of the Pacific Northwest air quality is anticipated to remain poor due to a strong temperature inversion trapping pollutants in the lower atmosphere.
