Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)

Significant National Weather:

Northeast
East of Lake Ontario lingering lake effect snow showers and flurries are expected to diminish by noon. Most of the region will be dry and chilly. Along the coast and in the Virginias highs are expected to reach into the 40s. From west Pennsylvania to Maine highs may reach the 20s and 30s.
South
Moisture off the Gulf of Mexico will produce freezing rain and showers in western Texas this morning. A lingering front near the tip of Florida will move eastward, producing showers and thunderstorms over Florida to parts of Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Temperatures will be below average for parts of the Southern Plains.
Midwest
Southerly winds 15 to 25 mph, with gusts over 30 mph is expected from Kansas to Michigan. Rain is forecast to develop over parts of the Middle Missouri Valley tonight, turning to light snow over portions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan by Monday evening. Temperatures will be 5 to 15 degrees above average for parts of the Upper Midwest.
West
A system progressing southward along the west coast late today will produce light rain over Southern California and lower elevations of the Southwest, with snow over the higher elevations. In eastern New Mexico patchy ice and morning showers are expected. In Alaska snow showers will persist over most of the Bering Sea and Aleutians through the day with some improvement tonight as the system moves inland and begins to weaken. More rain and wind will move into the central Aleutians Monday with the next storm.

Earthquake Activity

Mexico
USGS reports that a magnitude 6.5 earthquake occurred Saturday evening, December 10, 2011. The quake was located approximately 82 miles north of Acapulco, Mexico at a depth of 40 miles. The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (WCATWC) both reported no tsunami generated. Media reported two unconfirmed fatalities and power outages in many districts of Mexico City. FEMA Region IX reports no injuries or impacts in the FEMA Region IX Areas of Responsibility.
