Significant National Weather

Northeast
A large portion of the Eastern U.S. will experience scattered rain and thunderstorms today before shifting northward into the New England this evening and Friday. The central Appalachians, Mid-Atlantic region and parts of Upstate New York could receive heavy rainfall of 1 to 2 inches through the day before the system moves into New England.
South
Rain and scattered thunderstorms are forecast across the Southeastern U.S. from eastern Mississippi to North Carolina and northward across the Tennessee Valley. Southern Florida may also receive rain and isolated thunderstorms.
Midwest
A cold front moving through the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys and Great Lakes will generate rain, thunderstorms and colder temperatures northward to the Canadian border. Windy, cooler conditions and scattered thunderstorms are possible across the Northern Plains, with wind gusts of over 30 mph forecast from North Dakota to northern Missouri.
West
Above average temperatures will continue from Southern California through the Southwest, accompanied by gusty winds in and around the mountains of Southern California. Rain and scattered snow showers are expected in the Washington Cascades and Northern Rockies. Strong winds are forecast to continue in eastern Montana and southern Wyoming.

Eastern Pacific
Tropical Depression Irwin
As of 5 a.m. EDT, Tropical Depression Irwin was located about 230 miles west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The depression is moving toward the northeast near 13 mph. A turn toward the east with a decrease in forward speed is forecast to occur later today. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected during the next 48 hours. Irwin is forecast to become a remnant low within 24 hours. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
Post-Tropical Cyclone Jova â Final Update
Jova made landfall in southern Mexico at 1 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Oct. 12 as a Category 2 hurricane (100 miles per hour winds).
As of 11 p.m. EDT, Oct.12, Post-Tropical Cyclone Jova was located approximately 45 miles east-northeast of Tepic, Mexico. The system is moving northeast near five mph and a slow northeastward motion is expected until dissipation. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 30 mph with higher gusts. Continued weakening is forecast, and the system should dissipate in a day or less. No watches or warnings are in effect; however, the remnant of Jova is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 2 to 4 inches over portions of southern Mexico.
Post-Tropical Cyclone Twelve-E â Final Update
As of 11 p.m. EDT, Oct. 12, Post-Tropical Cyclone Twelve-E had weakened to a remnant low located about 95 miles east-northeast of Salina Cruz, Mexico. Moving north-east at 3 mph, this system is expected to drift slowly northeastward until dissipation. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 30 mph with higher gusts. Additional weakening is likely and the system is forecast to dissipate by this evening. There are no watches or warnings in effect; however, the remnants of the depression could produce total rainfall accumulations of 5 to 10 inches over portions of southern Mexico and Guatemala.
Central Pacific
No tropical cyclones are expected through Friday evening.
Western Pacific
There are no tropical cyclones threatening U.S. territories.

Earthquake Activity

Oregon
A magnitude 5.3 earthquake (downgraded from magnitude 5.9) occurred approximately 100 miles off the coast of Oregon at 13 minutes after midnight EDT. The quake was located 262 miles west-southwest of Portland, Ore., at a depth of 6.2 miles. No tsunami was generated and there were no reports of damage or injuries.

Wildfire Update

Wednesday, October 12, 2011: National Preparedness Level 2. Initial wild-land fire attack activity was LIGHT with 60 new fires, of which one was a new large fire, three were large fires contained, and two were large uncontained fires. Wild-land fires are presently active in Nevada, Texas, Oklahoma and Minnesota.
