Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)
Significant National Weather West A strong early winter storm is affecting many of the Western states, producing rain, snow, and strong winds. Significant snowfall is anticipated for higher elevations in Utah and Colorado. Rain and scattered thunderstorms, with possible isolated tornadoes, are expected in eastern Colorado. Heavy rains with possible localized flash flooding are forecast for the Desert Southwest. South Rain and isolated storms accompanied by strong winds is forecast for the Southern Plains and portions of Florida and Georgia. A few storms could be severe with isolated tornadoes. Midwest Light rain with scattered thunderstorms is anticipated for the Northern and Central Plains. Some of the storms could become severe, producing hail and isolated tornadoes, for portions of Nebraska to Kansas. Heavy winds are possible in the Upper Mississippi Valley. Northeast Typical fall conditions can be expected for the Northeast and the Mid-Atlantic states. Tropical Activity Atlantic / Caribbean / Gulf Tropical Storm Philippe As of 5 a.m. EDT Oct. 6, Tropical Storm Philippe was located about 455 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving north-northeast at 8 mph. A turn toward the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected later today. Maximum sustained winds are 70 mph with higher gusts. Philippe is expected to become a hurricane today before slow weakening starts of Friday. Tropical storm force winds extend outward 85 miles. Eastern Pacific Tropical Depression Ten-E As of 5 a.m. EDT Oct. 6, the center of Tropical Depression Ten-E was located 610 miles south of Manzanillo, Mexico as it moves west-northwest at 9 mph. This general motion should continue for the next 24 to 48 hours, followed by a turn toward the northwest on Saturday. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. The depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today and further strengthening is expected. Tropical Depression Eleven-E As of 5 a.m. EDT Oct. 6, the center of Tropical Depression Eleven-E was located 885 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja, Calif., Mexico as it moves west-northwest at 6 mph. A gradual turn north with a decrease in forward speed is expected during the next 48 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. The depression is forecast to become a tropical storm later today or Friday. Central Pacific No tropical cyclones are expected through Friday evening. Western Pacific There are no tropical cyclones threatening U.S. territories. Disaster Declaration Activity Maryland On Oct. 5, 2011, the President signed Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-4038-DR for the State of Maryland as a result of the Remnants of Tropical Storm Lee, which impacted portions of the state September 6-9, 2011. Specifically, the declaration provides Public Assistance for Anne Arundel, Cecil, Charles, and Prince Georgeâs Counties. All counties and the Independent City of Baltimore in the State of Maryland are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program. More... |
