Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)

Significant National Weather

Northeast
The second major storm to hit the Northeast in recent weeks is quickly moving away from New England but scattered light snow and strong winds will linger for today. Moderate lake effect snow showers downwind from the Great Lakes will continue for western New York and parts of the Central Appalachians. Weather conditions will be cold and clear for Southern New England and the much of the Mid-Atlantic States through Thursday.
West
A series of winter storms are forecast for the Pacific Northwest today and into Friday. Coastal and low elevation rain and mountain snow is expected from the Northwest eastward to the Northern Rockies and High Plains through Friday. Strong, powerful winds are expected for portions of Wyoming with westerly winds forecast at 35-45 mph and gusts up to 65 mph.
Midwest
Lake effect snow is forecast over northwest Indiana and northern Ohio with light to moderate snow accumulations expected. Scattered light snow showers began on Wednesday for portions of the Dakotas and Upper Mississippi Valley and will continue through the end of the week. Light to moderate mountain snow will continue for much of West Virginia this morning.
South
A hard freeze and below normal temperatures continue through Friday for eastern Texas, southern Louisiana, southern Georgia, and most of Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Temperature highs will be in the mid 20s.

Eastern US Winter Storm Response

Snow totals by late Wednesday from the winter storm system that affected much of Southeast and Mid-Atlantic since Saturday are in excess of 30 inches in western Connecticut and Massachusetts, 26 inches in Vermont, and 18 to 24 inches across Long Island, Rhode Island, and southern New Hampshire. All FEMA Regions are at a Watch/Steady State and there are no requests for FEMA assistance.
Earthquake Activity

Numerous minor earthquakes have occurred near San Juan Bautista, Calif., including a 4.5 magnitude quake that occurred at the same location early Wednesday morning. The aftershocks have occurred along or near the San Andreas Fault zone, approximately 45 miles south-southeast of San Jose, Calif.Â*
