Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)

Significant National Weather

Northeast:
Today, an approaching cold front will bring steady rain showers to western New England. Showers are more likely later tonight into Wednesday as the cold front moves across the region. A narrow band of showers and thunderstorms will move into the northern Mid-Atlantic and the southeast by tonight.
South:
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Southeast. Severe thunderstorms in and around the southern Appalachians could produce hail and damaging wind gusts.
Midwest:
Heavy rains with embedded thunderstorms are expected to continue across the Lower Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys.

West:
A wintry mix of rain and snow showers will continue with snow levels lowering below the passes in the Cascades with possible heavy snow in the Cascades. Light rain, mountain snow and a few thundershowers are forecast in the Northern Rockies and Northern High Plains.
Severe Weather Outbreak â April 25-28

On April 25 -28, severe weather moved across the Southeast which produced over 300 preliminary tornado reports and significant damage in AR, AL, GA and MS.
Alabama
As of May 2, there were 236 fatalities with 2,219 injured and 7 missing. The Town of Gurney in Madison County sewage system lift station remains inoperable.The Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant near Decatur, AL achieved a cold shut down on April 27th and remains on back-up generator power for cooling. As of May 2, approximately 150,000 customers were without power.
As of May 2, the American Red Cross ARC reports 17 shelters open with 406 occupants.

Mississippi
An Interim Operation Facility has been established in Pearl. A total of 35 fatalities and 176 injuries have been reported.
One mobile Disaster Recovery Center has been established in Smithville. As of May 2, the ARC reports 2 shelters are open with 57 occupants.
Georgia
As of May 2, the total number of fatalities stands at 15 with 115 injuries reported.
Eleven additional counties have been added to the Governorâs State of Emergency for a total of 27.
Power has been restored to Dade County including the City of Trenton water treatment and distribution systems as of Monday, May 2. As of May 2, approximately 1,401 customers remain without power. As of May 2, the ARC reports 3 shelters open with 18 occupants.
Kentucky
There was one confirmed fatality.
The City of Smithland (Pop 386) located in Livingston County and the City of Ledbetter (Pop 1,658) located in McCracken County have evacuated in advance of floodwaters breaching their levees. Approximately 100 Kentucky National Guardsmen are deploying to Ledbetter to assist Fish and Wildlife officers with evacuation efforts. As of May 2, the American Red Cross ARC reports 6 shelters open with 31 occupants.
Tennessee
There are 36 confirmed fatalities and 94 injuries. 23,749 customers without power.
As of May 2, the American Red Cross ARC reports 12 shelters open with 104 occupants.
North Carolina
There have been 24 fatalities and 100âs of injuries reported. The ARC reports 1 shelter open with 170 occupants as of May 1.
Louisiana
Less than 1,000 customers without power.There are no requests for FEMA assistance.
Arkansas
A total of 11 storm related fatalities and 12 injuries were reported. Neighborhoods in Prairie County are being evacuated for rising flood waters from the White River. On May 2, between 200 and 300 households in flood-prone areas east of the White River at Des Arc and Biscoe were being notified to evacuate. There are no additional requests for FEMA assistance.
Midwest Spring Flooding

Â*Flooding will continue across portions of southern Illinois and Indiana. The flooding has impacted numerous local and state roads, agricultural land and some residential areas.
Cairo, IL
At approximately 11:00 p.m. EDT, on Monday, May 2, the first component of the BPNM Project was executed, breaching the first section of the levee.Â*
Indiana
Â*A total of 13 counties have declared a state of emergency.
Missouri
Â*There are no requests for FEMA assistance or commodities.

Disaster Declaration Activity

Arkansas
On May 2, 2011, the President signed Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-1975-DR for the State of Arkansas for Severe Storms, Tornadoes, and Associated Flooding beginning April 23, and continuing.Â* The declaration approves Individual Assistance for Benton, Clay, Faulkner, Garland, Lincoln, Pulaski, Randolph and Saline. Also, Public Assistance was approved for Benton, Clay, Faulkner, Garland, Lincoln, Pulaski, Randolph and Saline Counties for emergency protective measures (Category B), limited to direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program. All counties in the State of Arkansas are eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

Alabama
Amendment No. 5 for FEMA-1971-DR-AL was approved to add Individual Assistance for Colbert, Morgan, and Winston Counties (already designated for debris removal and emergency protective measures [Categories A and B], including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program).

Amendment No. 6 for FEMA-1971-DR-AL was approved to add Individual Assistance for Chilton, Coosa, Shelby, Pickens, and Talladega Counties (already designated for debris removal and emergency protective measures [Categories A and B], including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program).
Georgia
Amendment No. 3 for FEMA-1973-DR-GA was approved to add Individual Assistance for Gordon, Harris, Heard, and Lumpkin Counties.Â* (FEMA HQ)Â*
