Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)

Significant National Weather:

West:
A series of Pacific storm systems will continue to impact the Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies through Saturday. Significant rainfall (up to 3 inches), gusty wind, and periodic mountain snow is expected. The rain may produce moderate rises on rivers west of the Cascades. Snow accumulations of one to three feet are forecast across portions of the Cascades tonight. Windy conditions will persist across the Northern Plains through this evening; gusts of up to 65 mph are possible. Ice Jam formation and flooding is possible in valleys across the Pacific Northwest due to the ongoing freeze/thaw pattern.
Midwest:
The storm system exiting Montana will spread eastward into southern Wisconsin producing a few inches of snow throughout the day.
South:
The region will remain dry under high pressure today with temperatures in the 60-70s.
Northeast:
A weak storm system will produce a few inches of snow across northern New York and central New England tonight into Saturday. Another storm system will produce rain and higher elevation snow in New England from New Yearâs Day into Monday morning. The remainder of the region is expected to remain dry.
Volcano Activity:

Mount Cleveland, located on the Aleutian Island of Chuginadak, erupted on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at approximately 8:30 a.m. EST. Volcanic Ash Advisories were issued; however trans-Pacific and trans-Polar air travel were not impacted. The maximum height of the ash plume reached only 20,000 feet. Mt. Cleveland is situated at the western end of the uninhabited Chunginadak Island. It is the highest of the four mountain group and one of the most active volcanoes of the Aleutian Islands.
Space Weather:

Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor. Radio blackouts reaching the R1 level occurred.
Space weather for the next 24 hours is predicted to be minor. Geomagnetic storms reaching the G1 level are likely.Â*
