Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)
Significant National Weather West A large low pressure system will gradually move across the Pacific Northwest today. This system will spread cold air and deep moisture across eastern Oregon, resulting in snow levels around 2,000 ft. A few afternoon thunderstorms are forecast across eastern Oregon and southeast Washington. A dry Pacific storm will move across the Great Basin today, producing wind gust of 35mph over the western portion of the San Joaquin Valley. Critical fire weather conditions are forecast across southwest Colorado due to low relative humidity and dry conditions. MidwestÂ* Strong winds are forecast across the Northern Plains today, with sustained winds of 25 to 45 mph and gust up to 60 mph. Isolated thunderstorms are possible over northwest Iowa this afternoon. Another weather system is expected to move across the region on Thursday, which may generate severe thunderstorms from Kansas to Iowa. SouthÂ* Many rivers across northwest Tennessee and western Kentucky will remain near or above flood stage over the next several days. Rivers across the Florida Panhandle are expected to rise in response to the widespread rainfall during the past couple of days. Some of these rivers are forecast to reach flood stage. NortheastÂ* Today, the Northeast will see mostly dry and sunny skies. Severe thunderstorms are possible over western Pennsylvania and Upstate New York this evening. (NOAA, National Weather Service, various media sources)Â* Severe Weather Mississippi Valley & Southeast: Federal Actions: The FEMA RWC is at Watch/Steady State and monitoring.Â* The FEMA NRCC is at Level III. Region IV: The FEMA Region IV RRCC is at Level II (Partial Activation), with ESFs 1, 3, 6, 7, 10, and 15 supporting from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. EDT. The IMAT is deployed in support of FEMA-1906-MS (Jackson, MS); tornadoes Apr 23-24.Â* A FEMA Liaison is deployed to Emergency Operation Centers in Tenn. and Ky. Massachusetts â Water Main Break Update: The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) experienced a âcatastrophicâ failure in the water system on Saturday May, 1 2010.Â* The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) reports the pipe has been repaired.Â* MWRA has deemed their water safe for public consumption and the boil water order for all 30 communities has been lifted. Oil Spill Response Update: Unified Command / USCG Response: The Department of Homeland Security reports this incident was declared a âSpill of National Significanceâ (SONS). Surface cleanups and oil skimming operations continue and the U.S. Coast Guard reports no confirmed shoreline impact of oil but continues its evaluation of the 24-hour continuous sub-sea dispersant trial. The amount of dispersants applied, to date, is 156,012 gallons on the surface and 13,000 gallons subsea. The amount of boom deployed, to date, is 486,940 feet; 668,081 feet available. To date, 23,968 barrels of oil / water mix has been collected. Shipping channels and ports remain open in the Gulf Coast Region. Federal Actions The FEMA Response Watch Center is at Watch/Steady State and monitoring. No FEMA assistance is requested. NORTHCOM deployed a Defense Coordinating Element to the Louisiana state EOC. Tennessee On May 4, 2010, the President declared FEMA-1909-DR for the State of Tennessee. Specifically, the President has authorized Individual Assistance for four counties and Public Assistance for four counties and debris removal and emergency protective measures (Categories A and B), including direct Federal assistance, under the Public Assistance program. Virginia As of May 4, 2010, Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-1874-DR for the Commonwealth of Virginia dated February 16, 2010, is amended (Amendment #3) to add three independent cities for Public Assistance, emergency protective measures (Cat B), including snow assistance under the PA program for any continuous 48 hour period during or approximate to the incident period.Â* Minnesota As of May 4, 2010, Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-1900-DR for the State of Minnesota dated April 19, 2010, is amended (Amendment #1) to add six counties and Prairie Island Indian Community for Public Assistance.Â* KansasÂ* As of May 4, 2010, Major Disaster Declaration FEMA-1885-DR for the State of Kansas dated March 9, 2010, is amended (Amendment #1) to add six counties for Public Assistance.Â*Â* (FEMA HQ) More... |
