Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)
Significant National Weather: NortheastÂ* Moderate to heavy rain is forecast for much of the region through Thursday. Rainfall accumulation of over an inch is expected in southern Pennsylvania and the Virginias. Icing is possible in the mountain valleys from Pennsylvania to northeast West Virginia and northwest Virginia. Temperature lows will range from below zero in northern Maine to the upper 30s and low 40s in southern Virginia. On Thursday, a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and moderate snow is expected to develop over parts of Upstate New York and Northern New England. SouthÂ*Â* Rain and thunderstorms are expected today in the Southeast. Heavy rain is possible for the southern Appalachians. A few severe thunderstorms are possible in eastern North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. With the arrival of a cold front, winds will increase over the Southern Plains. Temperature lows will range from the 20s and 30s in the southern High Plains to 60s and low 70s in extreme south Florida. MidwestÂ*Â* Moderate to heavy rain is forecast for the Ohio Valley today. Rainfall accumulation of 1 inch is possible across portions of Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Snow showers are expected from the Northern Plains through the Upper Mississippi Valley. Temperatures will be 15 to 20 degrees above average for parts of the Upper Great Lakes into parts of the Middle Mississippi Valley, while temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees below average for most of the High Plains and Rockies. More snow, up to six inches, is expected Thursday from the Mississippi Valley to Michigan. WestÂ*Â* Light snow is forecast from southern Wyoming to Colorado and northeast New Mexico today. Snowfall accumulations should fall between 1 to 4 inches. Strong winds will continue in the High Plains from eastern Montana to northeast New Mexico. Temperature lows will range from between near zero degrees and the teens across the interior Northwest to the 30s and 40s in the lower elevations of California and the deserts. Space Weather: No space weather storms were observed over the past 24 hours. No space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours. Heavy Snow/Blizzard Conditions - Alaska Severe winter weather is forecast with watches and warnings scattered statewide. The most severe areas are along the northern Gulf of Alaska. Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect until early this morning for Alaskaâs southeast coast from Prince William Sound, including Cordova, to the northern panhandle. Scattered power outages and road closures are reported south of Anchorage and on the Kenai Peninsula due to high winds, heavy snow and at least two major highway avalanches. Blizzard conditions were expected to add 6 to 14 inches of snow by this morning, the 26th consecutive day of snowfall for the fishing community of Cordova along Alaskaâs eastern Prince William Sound. Reduced snowfall is forecast today and Thursday. The Alaska National Guard deployed 57 personnel to Cordova on Sunday for snow removal operations, and, along with State and contracted resources, have cleared streets and accessed isolated residents. Roof collapse damage includes four public/commercial structures and two private structures. The local shelter remains active with no inhabitants, and the airport and ferry terminal remain open. No fatalities or injuries reported. The Alaska State EOC remains partially activated and has one team deployed to Cordova. Avalanche control personnel are onsite. The Region X RRCC remains at Watch/Steady State, and there have been no requests for FEMA assistance.Â*(NOAA/NWS, FEMA Region X) Tropical Weather Outlook No new activity (FEMA HQ) Earthquake Activity No significant activity in the United States or U.S. Territories. A Magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off the West Coast of Northern Sumatra, at a depth of 18.1 miles, on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 1:37 p.m. EST. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center stated that while a widespread tsunami threat did not exist, coasts near the epicenter could be affected by a local tsunami. An official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said there were no immediate reports of casualties and later lifted the local tsunami warning.
