Homeland Security Threat Level: YELLOW (ELEVATED)
Remnants of Lee As a Tropical Storm, Lee produced heavy rains, strong winds and tornadoes along the Gulf Coast then slowly moved northward into the Northeast. As of 11:00 p.m. EDT on September 7, there was no discernable circulation from Lee; however, heavy rain and flooding continues in the Northeast. Rainfall totals are as follows:
Just over 8 inches were recorded in Massachusetts, North Carolina and New Jersey; Virginia received over 9 inches. Hurricane Irene - ResponseNew York Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Broome, Greene and Schenectady Counties where flooding is ongoing. At 4:40 p.m. EDT, Sep 7, approximately 7,530 customers remain without power. Approximately 20,000 residents have evacuated from Binghamton to Binghamton University. Voluntary evacuations are ongoing in Delaware, Ulster and Schoharie Counties. Nine shelters are open in Chenango, Broome and Delaware Counties with a total of 571 occupants. A State of Emergency has been declared in Otsego County. Pennsylvania Upper Boone Dam (private) has half the spillway blocked; evacuations below the dam are ongoing. Approximately 2,800 customers remain without power. Hershey medical center in Dauphin County is surrounded by water with difficulty entering/exiting the facility.Â*The hospital is not closed at this time. Presently, there are 10 shelters open; however, only 50 people are reported in all shelters. Luzerne County Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for residents in low lying areas in Wilkes-Barre, PA. The Susquehanna River at Binghamton is at 21.04 feet- Major Flood Stage (7 ft above Flood Stage). Bradford County Approximately 700 school children are being sheltered due to impassable roads and high-water. Sullivan County Dushore Borough is isolated due to high water.Â* Alabama There are 2 shelters open with 28 occupants.Approximately 77,000 customers remain without power. Tennessee Approximately 32,000 customers remain without power in Hamilton County. Georgia One shelter is opened with an unknown amount of occupants. Approximately 6,500 customers remain without power. Louisiana Power has been restored to all areas. Vermont Significant National Weather There are 8 shelters open with 67 occupants. Six Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open. Massachusetts There is 1 shelter open with 3 occupants.Power has been restored to all customers. Connecticut Power restoration has been restored New York There are 10 shelters open with 54 occupants. Eight DRCs are open; another 9 DRCs are expected to be established in the coming weeks. New Jersey There are 4 shelters open with 194 occupants. Statewide power outages have decreased to 1,700 (flooding and damage have delayed restoration). One DRC remains open. Virginia Â*Approximately 1,491 customers remain without power. North Carolina There are 2 shelters open with 49 occupants. 8 DRCs are fully operational. NortheastÂ* Tropical Weather OutlookHeavy rain associated with the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee is forecast from Virginia to New England through this evening. Flood Warnings will remain in effect today, and record river flooding will continue to impact portions of Pennsylvania and southern New York. Flooding across the Mid-Atlantic Region is expected to continue through the weekend. Flash floods and mudslides are possible across portions of Maryland, Pennsylvania and southern New York. SouthÂ* Rain showers are forecast for the Southern Appalachians. Morning showers and isolated afternoon thunderstorms are expected in the Southern Plains. High temperatures are expected to be in the 60s and lower 70s in the Tennessee Valley and the Southern Appalachians. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80s and 90s across the South with the hottest temperatures in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue over central Florida through Friday and Saturday in the vicinity of a stalled out frontal zone. MidwestÂ* The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee will continue to produce rain and showers in the Ohio Valley and southeast Michigan through this evening. Temperatures will range from the high 50s and 60s in the Ohio Valley to the middle 80s in portions of the Dakotas. WestÂ* Monsoonal rain showers, accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, are expected in the Central Rockies and portions of the Southwest. Red flag Warnings continue through this afternoon for portions of California and Oregon. Hot and dry conditions are forecast across much of the region. Showers and thunderstorms are expected across portions of the Rocky Mountains from the Northern Plains to Arizona and New Mexico. Temperatures are forecast to climb to the 100 to 115 degree range in the deserts. Tropical Storm Maria Tropical Storm NateAt 2:00 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Maria is located 1,005 miles east-southeast of the Leeward Islands moving west at 23 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 50 mph. This general motion is expected to continue today. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest and a decrease in forward speed is forecast for tonight and Friday. Tropical Storm force winds extend outward 85 miles from the center. At 2:00 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Nate is located 130 miles west-northwest of Campeche, Mexico and is moving east at 2 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 45 mph. Some strengthening is expected today and Nate could become a Hurricane by Friday. Erratic eastward or northeastward motion is expected today followed by a slow northward motion on Friday. Tropical Storm Force winds extend outward 105 from the center. Hurricane Katia At 2:00 a.m. EDT Hurricane Katia is located about 315 miles west of Bermuda moving north near 14 mph. Maximum sustained winds are 90 mph. Katia is expected to turn to the northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected tonight. On the forecast track the center of Katia will move between the east coast of the United States and Bermuda today. Eastern Pacific Central PacificNo tropical cyclone activity is expected over the next 48 hours. There are no tropical cyclones expected through Friday evening. Western Pacific There are no tropical cyclones threatening U.S. Territories. FMAG Approval No activity Wildfire Activity Bastrop County Complex Fire FEMA-2958-FM-TX was approved September 4, 2011. The fire has consumed 33,038 acres with 0% containment. A Type 1 IMT is responding to the incident. 20 subdivisions remain evacuated; nearly 785 homes have been destroyed.Two fatalities have been reported. FEMA-2963-FM-TX, The fire had consumed 75 acres and is 90% contained. Thirteen homes were destroyed in the city of Leander. Bear Creek Fire â (Cass County, TX) Travis CountyFEMA-2965-FM-TX was approved September 6, 2011. The fire has consumed over 14,000 acres, six homes were destroyed. Pedernales Fire- Final (No change) FEMA-2959-FM-TX was approved on September 5, 2011. The fire has consumed 6,500 acres, 80% contained, 67 homes destroyed. Steiner Ranch Fire Update Disaster Declaration ActivityFMAG-2960-FM was approved September 5, 2011. The fire has consumed 150 acres with 40% containment. More than 1,000 residents have evacuated. Thirty five homes were destroyed; 23 homes have received damage. Riley Road Fire (Grimes County) FEMA-2964-FM was approved September 6, 2011. The fire has consumed 5,000 acres with 30% containment. Seventy five homes have been destroyed. Two shelters have been opened.
