Heavy Snow/Blizzard Conditions - Alaska

Severe winter weather is forecast with watches and warnings scattered statewide. The most severe areas are along the northern Gulf of Alaska. Blizzard and Winter Storm Warnings are in effect until early this morning for Alaskaâs southeast coast from Prince William Sound, including Cordova, to the northern panhandle. Scattered power outages and road closures are reported south of Anchorage and on the Kenai Peninsula due to high winds, heavy snow and at least two major highway avalanches.
Blizzard conditions were expected to add 6 to 14 inches of snow by this morning, the 26th consecutive day of snowfall for the fishing community of Cordova along Alaskaâs eastern Prince William Sound. Reduced snowfall is forecast today and Thursday. The Alaska National Guard deployed 57 personnel to Cordova on Sunday for snow removal operations, and, along with State and contracted resources, have cleared streets and accessed isolated residents. Roof collapse damage includes four public/commercial structures and two private structures. The local shelter remains active with no inhabitants, and the airport and ferry terminal remain open. No fatalities or injuries reported.
The Alaska State EOC remains partially activated and has one team deployed to Cordova. Avalanche control personnel are onsite. The Region X RRCC remains at Watch/Steady State, and there have been no requests for FEMA assistance.Â*(NOAA/NWS, FEMA Region X)
