Response to Hurricane Irene

Maine
Two confirmed fatalities reported.
New Hampshire
.One confirmed fatality reported. There is one shelter open with six occupants.

Vermont
There are seven shelters open with 61 occupants.
Massachusetts
One confirmed fatality reported. There is one shelter open with four occupants.
Connecticut
Two confirmed fatalities reported. Approximately 27,000 customers remain without power; full restoration is expected Sep 7. (Infrastructure Protection 6:41p.m. EDT Sep 4) There are three shelters open with three occupants. One bridge in Bridgeport is not operational. They are 167 boil water advisories in effect.
New York
. Seven confirmed fatalities reported. There are seven shelters open with 79 occupantsSix Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are open; another six DRCs will open next week.
New Jersey
Seven confirmed fatalities reported. There are 9 shelters open with 323 occupants..Fifteen roads remain closed due to flooding. The Passaic River at Pine Brook and Little Falls remain at Flood Stage, though river levels are receding. Evacuations remain in effect for residents in three counties.
Puerto Rico
One confirmed fatality reported. There are two shelters open with 73 occupants. Seven DRCs are operational.
Virginia
Four confirmed fatalities reported. Approximately 4,100 customers remain without power.
Maryland
Three confirmed fatalities reported. Minimal power outages have been reported.There is one shelter open with four occupants.
Pennsylvania
Four confirmed fatalities reported. Approximately 1,030 customers remain without power.
North Carolina
Seven confirmed fatalities reported. There are 4 shelters open with 64 occupants.. Eight DRCs are fully operational.
Severe Weather in Region V

Michigan
Severe thunderstorms occurred across Michiganâs Lower Peninsula Saturday night September 3. Approximately 80,000 (peak outages 120,000) customers remain without power in Oakland, Wayne, and Washtenaw Counties. Full power restoration is expected Monday evening. In Ann Arbor, the Notre Dame Stadium was evacuated due to lightning, 55 mph winds, and one inch hail. In River Rouge, ten people were injured when a festival tent collapsed. There are no unmet needs and no requests for FEMA assistance.

Significant National Weather

SouthÂ*
Heavy rain and thunderstorms from Tropical Depression Lee are forecast from Mississippi to the southern Appalachians. The main threats are flooding rains and isolated tornadoes. Flash flooding rainfall of 2 to 7 inches is likely. The Southeast will experience some rain and isolated thunderstorms, and a few tornadoes are possible across the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Georgia.

Rain and thunderstorms from TD Lee will continue from the Virginias to Maine. Rainfall accumulation will average from 1 to 3 inches in the affected areas. Localized flash flooding will be the primary threat.

MidwestÂ*
Some rain is forecast for portions of Ohio and Kentucky, otherwise the rest of the Region will stay dry and sunny.
WestÂ*
Isolated thunderstorms are expected from Oregon to western Colorado, and from the Desert Southwest into the Four Corners Region. The remainder of the Region will be dry and pleasant.
Tropical Weather Outlook

Tropical Depression (TD) LeeÂ*
At 11:00 p.m. EDT, September 5, the center of Tropical Depression Lee was located about 55 miles west-southwest of McComb, Mississippi and moving east-northeast near 7 mph. A turn toward the northeast with some increase in forward speed is expected in the next 24 to 48 hours. On the forecast track, the center of Lee will move across southern Mississippi through Monday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 35 mph, with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected. Â*
Tropical Storm Lee is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 10 to 15 inches from the central Gulf Coast Region. Heavy rains will continue to expand northeast into the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians Mountains through Tuesday with rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches expected. These rains are expected to cause extensive flooding and flash flooding. A few tornadoes are possible overnight and Monday over portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and southwestern Georgia. This will be the last public advisory provided by the National Hurricane Center on TD Lee. Â*
Mississippi
The MS Governor issued an executive proclamation declaring a state of emergency as a result of the forecasted conditions of Tropical Storm Lee. One unconfirmed tornado has touchdown in Stone County yesterday. Six homes received damage and 5 roads are closed. One unconfirmed tornado has touchdown in Covington County. Damage due to flooding to 25 residences was reported in Jackson County. Two shelters are open with two occupants. Numerous road closures (approximately 50) have been reported in 4 counties.
Alabama
An unconfirmed tornado has touchdown in Baldwin County yesterday. Twelve homes were reported to have sustained minor damage.
Florida
There was an unconfirmed tornado touchdown near Pensacola, FL early morning on Sunday, Sep 4, 2011. Two homes received major damage and two businesses received minor damage.
Louisiana
The LA Governor issued an executive proclamation declaring a state of emergency as a result of the forecasted conditions of Tropical Storm Lee. Thirty-four parishes and the Town of Grand Isle have been declared. Mandatory evacuations are in effect for portions of Jefferson Parish; voluntary evacuations are in effect for portions of Jefferson, Lafourche and Terrebonne Parishes. Six shelters are open with 52 occupants. Approximately 31,000 customers remain without power.
Atlantic / Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico
Hurricane Katia
At 5:00 a.m. EDT September 5, the center of Hurricane Katia was located about 400 miles north of the northern Leeward Islands, and moving toward the northwest near 12 mph. This general track with a slight decrease in forward speed is expected to continue through Tuesday. Katia is a Category II Hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours and Katia could become a major hurricane on Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 100 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extend outward to 45 miles. Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 185 miles. Large swells
generated by Katia are expected to affect parts of the East Coast of the United States during the next few days. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.
Eastern Pacific
There is no tropical cyclone activity.
Central Pacific
There are no tropical cyclones are expected through Tuesday evening.
Western Pacific
There are no tropical cyclones threatening U.S. Territories.

Bastrop County Complex Fire â (Bastrop County, TX)
A Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Bastrop County Complex Fire was approved on Sep 4. The fire threatened 2,500 residences in four subdivisions in Bastrop County, TX. The fire has burned 14,000 acres and destroyed over 200 homes. Containment percentage is unknown at this time. Approximately 1,000 people have been evacuated. Two American Red Cross shelters are open with 250 occupants.
Hodde Fire â (Travis County, TX)
A Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Hodde Fire was approved on Sep 4. The fire threatened 190 residences and one retirement home in the West Creek subdivision in Travis County, TX. The fire has burned 150 acres and containment is unknown at this time. Approximately 530 people and the retirement home have been evacuated. An American Red Cross shelter is open with 65 occupants.
Ferguson FireÂ*Update â (Comanche County, OK)
The fire began on Sep 1 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. At that time, the fire was threatening 110 homes and destroyed 10 homes. A Fire Management Assistance Grant for the Ferguson Fire was approved on Sept 3. The fire has burned 26,606 acres and is at 30 percent containment. Approximately 100 homes remain under mandatory evacuation orders around Mountain Village. Eleven homes have been destroyed. An American Red Cross shelter has been established.
