Significant National Weather:

West:
The western U.S. will be dry today with decreased winds and seasonal temperatures. Snow and gusty winds are expected across southern Alaska, with accumulations of 1-3 inches possible.
Midwest:
A storm system exiting the Upper Mississippi Valley will move into the Great Lakes region this morning, producing heavy snow and strong winds in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.Â* Snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are expected today, with over a foot of snow possible by Monday evening. Isolated accumulations of up to 20 inches are possible across northwest Lower Michigan.Â* Strong winds will enhance blowing and drifting of snow and may decrease visibility across the area.Â*
South:
Rain will develop along the Middle Mississippi Valley and expand southward into the central Gulf Coast.Â* Brisk winds are expected across Oklahoma, northwestern Texas and northern Arkansas.
Northeast:
Temperatures will be 10-15 degrees above average across most of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today, though the cold front moving through the Midwest will begin to usher in arctic air tonight.
Space Weather:

Space weather for the past 24 hours has been minor; radio blackouts reaching the R1 level have occurred. No space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours.

Earthquake Activity

Ohio
At 3:05 p.m. EST, December 31, 2011, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake occurred approximately 5 miles NW of Youngstown, OH, 6 miles SE of Warren, OH, and 55 miles ESE of Cleveland, OH at a depth of 1.4 miles (poorly constrained). Ten small seismic events have been recorded in this area over the past eight months, including one on Christmas Eve. No significant damages, injuries or fatalities have been reported. The State Emergency Operations Center remains at normal operations with no anticipated activation.Â* There has been no request for FEMA assistance.
Japan
At 12:27 a.m. EST, January 1, 2012, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurred south of Honshu Japan approximately 307 miles SSW of Tokyo, Japan, at a depth of 216 miles. A tsunami was not generated and there have been no reports of damage or injury.Â*Â*
