Significant National Weather

West
Much of the Northwest will have temperatures in the 60s and be even cooler in the mountains. Unsettled weather and windy conditions will occur over much of the Great Central Basin especially in Montana and northern Wyoming. Higher elevations of Wyoming will see snow showers. Portions of western Washington will receive a few showers.
MidwestÂ*
The remnants of Hermine will bring heavy rainfall to the southern portions of the Middle Mississippi Valley and some areas are at risk for flash flooding. The Great Lakes area will have a dry day, as will the Southern Plains. Showers and thunderstorms will move into the high Plains during the next 24 hours. The Northern Plains and the Upper Midwest will see scattered showers and rain is forecast for areas just south of the Ohio River.
Northeast
The Northeast will be mainly dry except for some widely scattered showers over parts of Upstate New York into Maine. The Middle Atlantic region will remain dry.
South
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast across Kentucky and the Tennessee Valley. Scattered thunderstorms are expected across parts of southern Florida and western Texas.

Tropical Weather Outlook

Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of MexicoÂ*
Tropical Depression Igor is 350 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands moving west at 13 mph. The storm is forecast regain tropical storm strength today. Igor is exiting the environment keeping it weakened and is anticipated to become a strong hurricane over the central tropical Atlantic during the next few days.
A different low pressure system located over the Windward Islands may slowly develop during the next few days. There is a medium chance, near 40 percent, of this system becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
Central PacificÂ*
An area of showers and isolated thunderstorms associated with a weak low pressure system is located about 650 miles south southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. There is a medium chance, 30 percent, of this feature becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.
Eastern and Western Pacific
No tropical cyclone activity is expected in the next 48 hours.

California Natural Gas Fire
A significant fire resulted from a natural gas line explosion in the Crestmoor subdivision in San Bruno in San Mateo County, CA, at approximately 6:00 p.m. PDT. The Governor of California requested a FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant which was approved at 1 a.m. EDT on Sept. 10, 2010.
The fire has destroyed 53 homes and damaged more than 100 additional homes. Fire suppression was hindered by a compromise in the water lines. The local utility company, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E), is investigating the cause of the explosion which is reported to be a break in a 16-24 inch gas line. Schools in the San Bruno Park School District are closed today. The fire is only a few miles from the San Francisco International Airport, fire suppression aircraft are also in the vicinity.

Colorado Wildfire
The Four Mile Canyon Fire in Boulder County, CO has consumed more than 6,100 acres and is 30 percent contained. Weather conditions are expected to worsen through today with winds increasing to 25-30 mph with gusts to 50 mph. FEMA Federal Management Assistance Grant 2855 was approved on Sept. 6, the Governor declared a State of Emergency for the fire area on Sept 7. There are no reported fatalities. Mandatory evacuations remain in effect for 20 subdivisions affecting 3,500 residents and 169 residences are reported destroyed. For the fire response, a Type I Incident Management Team assumed command on Sept 9.
